Smuggling in San Diego

On Monday, Border Patrol agents in San Diego seized a staggering 232 pounds of fentanyl with a street value of about $3 million from a single vehicle. The drugs were confiscated during a traffic stop in San Clemente, which is located about 75 miles inland from the U.S.-Mexico border. This marks the third major fentanyl bust in February by Border Patrol agents between ports of entry, indicating that the drugs were smuggled past the CBP either in a vehicle or backpacked into the U.S. by mules. The amount of fentanyl seized in the recent bust is enough to kill 50 million people, according to Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz. The fact that such a large quantity of this deadly substance is being smuggled into the country is alarming and underscores the need for greater resources to combat drug trafficking at the border.
